Al Wood Quartet
Having been a frequent visitor to Wigan Jazz Club in the guise of soloist, with the Al Wood Quintet, Al Wood Nine, Al Wood Big Band and various other guest appearances over the years, Wood returns to Wigan in the company of Dave Lynane on bass, Dave Hassell, drums and Martin Longhawn, piano, a pretty formidable trio making up the Al Wood Quartet, which marks the end of more than a year of enforced absence from the jazz scene.
Entering the music business straight from school in 1959 Al’s career has involved mainly big band work, most notably in Maynard Ferguson’s UK band along with Dave Lynane, and working with such jazz greats as John Dankworth, Peter King, Conte Candoli, Buddy Childers, Phil Woods and Rob McConnell to name but a few.
In 1983 he joined the staff of Leeds College Of Music teaching jazz saxes, trumpet and trombone, and running several ensembles including the College flagship big band, whilst still working as a jazz musician and continuing after retiring from the College in 2007.
Today the quartet will perform a programme of timeless jazz classics and familiar standards which will hopefully re-create the old jazz atmosphere that we all know and love.
